A lot of the enquiries we get about pergolas in Woodcroft are from people who already have an outdoor area of some kind. It might be an old pergola that has seen better days, a bare concrete slab, or a carport that is too small for today’s cars. The job is often about making an established home work better, not starting from scratch.
A suburb of established family homes
Woodcroft is about 20 km south of the Adelaide CBD, bounded by Reynell, Bains and Panalatinga roads, with the Hills Face Zone along its eastern edge. Panalatinga Creek runs through the suburb.
Most of Woodcroft was subdivided for housing from the 1970s onward, so many homes are now a few decades old. That tends to mean:
- backyards with mature trees and established gardens
- existing slabs or paving that could sit under a new roof
- older carports or pergolas that are due for replacement
- eaves and gutters that need careful planning when a new roof ties in
Replacing or upgrading an existing pergola
If your current pergola is sagging, weathered or simply the wrong size, a new one is often simpler than patching it. We look at whether the existing slab can be reused, where the posts should go, and how high the new roof can sit against your fascia.
Common upgrades include:
| From | To | Why people choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Open timber frame | Roofed steel pergola | Full rain cover and a lower-maintenance frame |
| Flat, low roof | Gable pergola | More headroom and a lighter feel underneath |
| Bare slab | Pergola plus composite or timber deck | A finished floor that sits level with the back door |
Carports Woodcroft driveways can fit
Families often outgrow the single carport that came with the house. We build carports in single, double and custom sizes, with flat or gable roofs, and design them to look like part of the home rather than an add-on.
Because carports sit near the street, they are more likely to need approval and should suit the streetscape. Our guide to carport and verandah council approval explains what to check before you commit to a design.
Working near the Hills Face edge
Homes on Woodcroft’s eastern side are closer to the Hills Face Zone, and some blocks there have more slope and more exposure to wind. We take that into account when we set out posts and footings, and we look at how the new structure will shed water away from the house.
Making the most of an older slab
An existing concrete slab can sometimes stay put under a new roof, which keeps the job simpler. We check its condition, levels and fall during the measure. If the slab is cracked, sits too low, or drains toward the house, a new timber deck laid over the area can give you a cleaner finish than patching the concrete.
We will tell you plainly which approach makes more sense for your yard, and the itemised quote shows each option separately so you can compare.
Approvals
Woodcroft is part of the City of Onkaparinga. Whether your project needs approval depends on its size, height and position, so check with the council or PlanSA. We can explain what usually applies and help prepare drawings.
