Angle Vale is a semi-rural township on the Adelaide Plains, about 12 km west of Gawler, with vineyards and farms on its edges and housing estates growing around the older town. We build pergolas, patios, carports and decks here for both kinds of property: brand-new estate homes with an empty yard, and established blocks with room to spread out.
Two kinds of Angle Vale backyard
Most Angle Vale enquiries fall into one of two groups, and each needs a different approach.
New estate homes. The house is finished, the yard is bare, and the alfresco under the main roof is too small for a table and a barbecue. An attached patio roof or flat-roof pergola can double the usable covered area and link to the existing slab.
Larger semi-rural blocks. There is plenty of space, often with sheds, vehicles and open views across paddocks. Here a freestanding gable pergola, a large carport or a deck positioned away from the house can make more sense than another structure hard against the back wall.
Designing for open plains
The land around Angle Vale is flat and open, and that changes the brief.
- Wind: there is less shelter from trees and neighbouring buildings, so we size footings and fixings for the actual site.
- Western sun: with no hills to block it, late-afternoon sun comes in low and hot. Orientation, roof overhang and a solid roof all help.
- Dust and heat: Colorbond and insulated patio roofs handle summer heat better than a bare frame, and a smooth roof surface is easier to keep clean than slatted timber.
Steel or timber?
For estate homes with modern facades, a steel pergola with a Colorbond roof usually matches the house and needs little upkeep. Timber suits older cottages and garden settings and can be stained to tone in. We’ll show you both at the measure.
Decks and outdoor floors
Many Angle Vale yards start with a small concrete slab or none at all. A composite or hardwood deck gives you a finished outdoor floor that steps straight out from the back door, and it can be built at the same time as the pergola above it so the posts, levels and drainage are planned together.
Freestanding structures on bigger blocks
On a larger Angle Vale block, the best spot for shade isn’t always against the house. A freestanding pergola near a pool area, a vegetable garden or a lawn where the kids play gives you a second outdoor room. Because it stands on its own posts, it doesn’t depend on the height of your eaves, and a gable roof can be set high enough to catch any breeze. We’ll walk the block with you at the measure and look at sun, views and access before choosing the position. If you are weighing materials, our guide to composite vs timber decking sets out the trade-offs.
Approvals in the City of Playford
Angle Vale is part of the City of Playford. Depending on the size, height and position of your structure, it may need development approval, and estate homes can also have design guidelines on the title. Read our explainer on council approval for pergolas in SA, check with council or PlanSA, and we’ll help prepare what’s needed.
